For the past few weeks I’ve been tinkering with 2 apps in Leopard that is more accessories than anything, one is Hyperspaces, one is Docks. These two applications are from separate developers, however their function complement each other nicely. Although I’m testing the trial edition of these 2 softwares, both of these apps are as good as the full version, only limited by the number of Spaces & Docks that can be made (only 3).

The basic idea of using these 2 applications are maximizing the use of Spaces feature, which is built in on Leopard. To be frank, I’m one of those people who rarely use Spaces, because I think it’s not really practical. I’m more used to the concept of ‘hiding’ the unnecessary apps using the ‘Hide’ feature which already available in Mac OS since the early days system 7. With these 2 apps, I’m willing to revisit the Spaces and hopefully learn something new.

Long story short, after installation of both apps, I learnt what they are capable from provided manual, and start tinkering. I divided my Spaces into 3: Internet, Creative, Fun. I also divided my Docks in 3 groups, compliment with the Spaces. The idea in Docks is that each ‘captured’ session of the Dock is linked with certain Spaces. This complement the main ability in Hyperspaces which is to be able to create ‘identity’ for each Spaces, so one can tell easily where they are (a major thing that Spaces lack).

After few weeks of playing around with these apps, I found out that for me it kinda limit my speed of moving from one apps to another. Setting which apps to work in the Docks is not as simple as it seems, mainly because it kinda need thorough planning what apps goes with what Spaces. Unplanned setting will cost you precious seconds waiting Spaces to change and Dock to load.

For those who like Spaces, especially the new generation of Mac adopters, I believe these 2 software are must have. Really simple, stable (tested in Leopard 10.5.8), and in a good hand it will makes you like a savvy mac user.
